Is it real? Yes and no. The general shape of the car is clearly intended to be the next Mitsubishi Eclipse coupe. The concept is fifty-fifty, sort of a production-intent body with a set of show-car doors - they swing up to open - that definitely won't make it into production in this price range.

What they said: The company called it the Concept-RA, for Road Alive, but RA is also the internal code for Ralliart, one of Mitsubishi's performance brands. They said it has a "jet fighter" nose.

What they didn't say: No official offered an explanation of why the car looks like a Porsche Cayman from the rear, and Audi TT in profile and seems to be wearing Mazda RX-8 front fenders. That said, at least the designers borrowed from some of the best.

What makes it tick? This business of high-performance clean diesel engines is beginning to get monotonous here in Detroit. The Concept-RA is powered by a 2.2-liter 16-valve direct-injection diesel engine with Mitsubishi's MIVEC variable valve-timing system. Mitsubishi says the little engine makes 310 pound-feet of torque and gets more than 40 miles a gallon in the bargain.

How much, how soon? When it gets here as the production Eclipse coupe in a year or so, expect the same kind of bargain-basement pricing that other Mitsubishi models go to market with.

How's it look? This was one of the prettiest, most together designs we've seen all day at Cobo Center, although we'd just as soon lose the engine-through-hood busyness on the nose.
